class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Performative Lecture, The Reception, Hamilton, Ontario. <\/em><\/p><p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Using Filipino food as an analogy, what if we imagine Filipinx Canadian Studies and Art as a grand <i>kamayan<\/i> feast: a messy, collective experience that unabashedly rejects the tools of Western dining civility \u2013 namely, the fork and knife \u2013 in favour of our hands. With our hands, we disrupt the foundation of whiteness \u2013 or at least, white rice. No ONE food is at the centre, but the <i>lumpia, bagoong, longanisa<\/i>, and <i>bangus <\/i>intermingle, compliment, and contrast each other in a culinary cacophony that we produce and consume for our benefit and our community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>We must sit at the boardroom tables of institutions, boards of directors of galleries, hiring committes of post-secondary institutions and act as jury members of grants, but we must also create our own tables: communal spaces of sharing, where our affects, sensibilities, and aesthetics are not exoticized or are relegated as multiculturalist add-ons to official knowledges and cultures, but cultivate new collectivities and abundant, sensuous, and fearless political, artistic, and scholarly projects.\u00a0 We must form a kamayan of scholarly and artistic excellence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-5d0d887d\" data-id=\"5d0d887d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32441151 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32441151\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/akimbo.ca\/listings\/the-reception\/\"><strong>The Reception<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is a two-day forum that aims to help decolonize arts institutions through community-building, advocacy, and socially-engaged art events and workshops. First conceived of by Centre for Margins* (Carmela Laganse + Taien Ng-Chan) as a participatory lecture and relational banquet inspired by Laganse\u2019s Filipina heritage,&nbsp;<em>The Reception<\/em>&nbsp;adopts the ethos of a kamayan or communal-style feast, in keeping with the idea of hospitality and celebration, as well as activism and rites of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>Born of a desire to bring BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) arts communities together to improve the current cultural landscape, the event is intended to strengthen the arts sector in southwestern Ontario by providing opportunities for shared learning and networking in the arts, specifically focused on BIPOC artists and cultural workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Reception<\/em>&nbsp;is presented in partnership by McMaster University\u2019s&nbsp;<em>School of the Arts<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>The Socrates Project<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Centre[3] for Artistic + Social Practice<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Centre for Margins*<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Coalition of Black and Racialized Artists (COBRA) Hamilton<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>the NEW Committee at the Hamilton Artists
